What's showing up?

Subconsciously our experiences, perceptions and moods show up with us at work. These influence our responses which lead to our actions.
Sometimes it makes things easier. And other times harder.
For example, let’s say you support a child who struggles with saying goodbye to their parent.
Maybe as a child your parent was nurturing. They soothed your big emotions. There wasn’t a problem too big or small they couldn’t help you with. So, whenever you see a child struggle with drop off, your empathy expands. You welcome them with open arms and comfort them until they feel better.
Now, let’s say you support a picky eater.
Maybe as a child you had to finish your plate regardless of if you liked the food. Your parents demanded you sit at the table until your food was done. So, whenever you see a child refuse to eat, your patience depletes. You keep repeating “eat your food” or tell them they won’t have dessert.
And of course, depending on how full or low your emotional bank account is in these micro moments it expands or depletes your resiliency.
As educators, we’re constantly shifting from one thing to another. As a reflective practice, it is helpful to zoom out on our day. Then we might begin to discover which situations deplete us.
And with honesty, curiosity, and compassion towards our self, we can slowly begin to understand “what’s showing up”.
This is the first step towards showing up a bit better for others. And with practice, we show up as we wished someone would’ve for us.
With all my love,
Alex
