Reality and Time

Have you ever tried something for a few days or weeks and stopped because it didn’t seem to work?

Maybe it was a personal goal like exercising, changing your diet, stretching, meditating, or going to bed earlier.

Or at work, you wanted to use visuals for transitions, stick to a consistent routine, focus on positive attention, or say empathetic statements to children when big emotions bubble up.

Whichever goal it was, unfortunately, without allowing sufficient time, repetition, and practice, we come up short.

And we repeat our ingrained habits. This excellent diagram (James Clear ‘Atomic Habits’ – p. 22) illustrates how the valley of disappointment phase (grey highlighted area) lasts longer than we had hoped.

And because perceived progress isn’t as linear as we had hoped, sometimes we call it quits.

However, this powerful visual shows how eventually results skyrocket. This is the sweet spot. But to reap the benefits of the compounding effects, we need to show up day in and day out.

And remember that it’s the small things that lead to big outcomes.

With all my love,

Alex
